Baseline Report on Incubators and Technology Transfer – Nine University Case Studies from East and Southern Africa

This baseline report presents an assessment of incubation and technology transfer capacities across nine partner universities participating in the UPLIFT-Ag project. It examines the current status, institutional arrangements, and operational models of incubators and technology transfer offices, highlighting variations in development stages and capacity gaps.

Through case studies and stakeholder insights, the report identifies key challenges and priority areas for strengthening innovation ecosystems, including skills development, resource mobilisation, and organisational structures. The findings provide a foundation for targeted capacity-building, training, and the development of sustainable models to enhance university–industry linkages and support agri-innovation and entrepreneurship.

The report contributes to ongoing efforts under the UPLIFT-Ag project to improve the relevance and responsiveness of agricultural higher education in Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, and Zimbabwe. It also offers valuable insights for institutions seeking to establish or strengthen incubation centres and technology transfer functions in resource-constrained environments.
