UR - University of Rwanda
University of Rwanda (UR) is the only public university institution in Rwanda. It was established in 2013, following the merger of seven higher learning institutions. The University of Rwanda is comprised of 6 Colleges and one Centre of Postgraduate studies, namely: College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS), College of Agriculture, Animal sciences and Veterinary Medicine (CAVM), College of Business and Economics (CBE), College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS), College of Education (CE), College of Science and Technology (CST), UR Center Postgraduate Studies. The current population size of students at UR is over 37,000 as of academic year 2021/2022. UR established a TTO at its centre of business development and commercialization, to enable faculty, researchers, and students to transfer their intellectual outputs for applied purposes to benefit the society. UNILAK - University of Lay Adventists of Kigali
The University of Lay Adventists of Kigali (UNILAK) is a private university established in 1997 by the Federation of Adventist Parents Associations for the Development of Education in Rwanda (FAPADER), a federation of Seventh-day Lay Adventists Secondary Schools Association. UNILAK was approved by the Government of Rwanda through Convention No. 001 on February 3, 1997, and obtained legal status as a nonprofit association with Ministerial Decree No. 89/11 on July 2, 2004. It was fully accredited by the government through Ministerial Order No. 002/09 on April 9, 2009. Located in the City of Kigali, Gasabo District, Remera Sector, UNILAK offers bachelor's and master's programs across four faculties: Law, Economic Sciences and Management, Environmental Studies, and Computing and Information Sciences. The university has expanded to the Southern Province (Nyanza) and Eastern Province (Rwamagana), where it operates modern boarding facilities.
UNILAK serves approximately 8,000 students and employs over 200 staff members. The university is working to operationalize a Technology Transfer Office (TTO) to help faculty, researchers, and students manage their intellectual assets for societal benefits. Despite having a streamlined process for graduate student research management, the mechanism for identifying and protecting intellectual property is still developing. UNILAK partners with various institutions, such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and others to provide training in innovation and entrepreneurship.
