
KU - Kenyatta University
KU is Kenya’s third public university and was established in 1985. The university has over 60, 000 students and 3000 staff, teaching programmes are in 7 schools and cover all fields of specialization. The Chandaria Business Innovation and Incubation Center at KU offers a comprehensive program for training, mentorship and linking innovators and the university to industry. The university has elaborate policies for Research, IP management, Partnerships, among others. A well streamlined process for Graduate students’ research management is in place but mechanism for identifying and harvesting IP for protection and commercialization is not effective. The university has several partnerships that provide tailor made trainings relevant to innovation and entrepreneurship development. KU provides a fund to support research and innovation; but most research and innovation is externally funded. CU - Chuka University
Chuka University (CU) was awarded a charter in January 2013 and has a student population of over 17,000 and over 325 teaching staff. Chuka University has a Technology and Innovation Support Centre (TISC) office that supports technology and innovations through Intellectual Property protection and capacity building activities. CU is working towards establishing a Chuka University Technology and Innovation Transfer and Commercialization Hub (CU-TITCH) to strengthen the capacity of innovators through incubation, transfer and commercialization of innovations. TTU - Taita Taveta University
TTU was established in 2016, it has over 3,000 students and 250 staff. The research output and postgraduate student population has been growing steadily with a masters student population of about 30. Commercialization of research innovations is domiciled in the department where the innovation was developed. TTU has an IP policy, students and staff need training on IP registration and commercialization of innovations. The university is still equipping laboratories and plans to provide seed money for small-scale innovative project. TTU programmes are aligned to industry needs, and the university plans to intensify research-industry linkages. TTU has five schools namely:- The School of Mines and Engineering, The School of Business Economics and Social Sciences, The School of Science and Informatics, The School of Agriculture, Earth and Environmental Sciences and The School of Education.
